 Postal Customer Counter

QR016

This Art Deco designed counter was originally located in the Miamisburg Post Office on Central Avenue, the current home of the Miamisburg Community Center. Made of cast bronze, the counter had sandstone pedestal legs covered with green marble caps. Unfortunately, those were lost and had to be replaced.

Recessed in the top of the table is a solid piece of green tinted glass approximately 1 ½ inches thick where customers could address their mail, affix postage stamps, and complete their business at the post office. On either side, along the back, three wells held bottles of ink for fountain pens.

Miamisburg had its first post office in 1822. Mail cost from 10 cents to 25 cents per piece, depending on how far it needed to travel. Early postal services were based in residences. Later there was an office in the old city building. From 1908-1940, the post office operated from the I.O.O.F. block on South Main Street, where Ron’s Pizza is now.

Allen and Joyce Jones donated this piece to the Miamisburg Historical Society in October of 2019
