Call to Arms: the War of 1812 at Heritage Village
Join us at the Heritage Village and be transported back to the year 1812 as we imagine the newly built Gebhart Tavern is visited by a recruitment party of U.S. soldiers scouring the frontier for recruits as the War of 1812 rages in the countryside and shores of the Great Lakes.
On leave from Fort Wayne, and dressed in period clothing of the time, a small group of historical reenactors will train you in the art of soldiering: how to carry and fire a musket*, march in formation, and follow orders. Hear stories from the front line, as our own Dr. John Treon, future founder of the little village of Miamisburg, serves as a surgeon at Fort Detroit under the command of General Hull. Learn about the struggles of life back then for the settlers, soldiers, and Native Americans as the boundary lines of a nation were being defined.
Will you join us in this call to arms?
* Important note: Wooden toy guns (completely inert and do not fire anything) will be handed out to those who would like to participate, and children are also encouraged to join.
