Tobacco Co-Op Indian

Tobacco Co-Op Indian

QR009

This large wooden Indian statue stood on the porch of a tobacco co-op warehouse overlooking the Hudson River in New Jersey, from the 1920s until sometime in the 1960s. The statue was carved from a single log by a master carver from Spain or Italy. The head and shoulder areas were sculpted from the base of the tree where the tree was the widest. Standing over 9 feet tall with a width of 3 feet at the shoulders, this Indian weighs about 700 pounds.

In 1997, Steve Lainhart of Carlisle professionally restored the statue. He took samples of the paint colors from the original to restore the beautiful colors we see today. Gary Jestice, former owner of the Hamburger Wagon, purchased this statue from a collector and donated it to the Miamisburg Historical Society in 2016.
